ELEVEN FISH had been caught on Friday, October 2, all by boats from CQB. The following Tuesday the harpooners got out again, and those from CQB caught twenty-six fish. Bob caught four bluefin in one day. Ron Lein got five one day, three the next, and two the day after that. Ron said he was flying high.

That Friday, October 9, was another tight day, with about sixteen boats at work in the whale zone. Brooksie refused to fly among the pack of planes this time. Bob and Wade ran four bunches all day long and harpooned two very fat fish.

Bob left the next day for Colorado, this time for an elk hunt. He took a case of lobsters along to cook for his friends there. Jonathan Mayhew’s brother, Greg, a commercial fisherman from Martha’s Vineyard, took Bob’s place on the Scratcher. On Monday the 12th, Greg Mayhew and Wade Behlman caught two of the five fish taken in the whale zone, and Eric Hesse got one. The harpoon category closed at midnight, and the 1992 season was over.

During the final two weeks of the season, 108 fish were landed in the harpoon category, 35 percent of the total number for the year. The average weight per fish during the last week of the season was 419 pounds, the culmination of a steady increase from the 350-pound average of July 10.
